Claire in her hometown of Alexandria with (from left): Evvie, a foster dog from Virginia German Shepherd Rescue; Gotti, adopted from the Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation; Sasha, a foster dog from the Mid-Atlantic Akita Rescue; and Jack, adopted from the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

"It's been a journey — the untimely death of a beloved dog, the reflex adoption of a challenging 100-pound Akita mix, becoming a foster parent for shelter dogs, learning dog behavior to rehabilitate "aggressive" dogs, managing rescue groups, writing public education programs, and always fostering a dog or two. There have been almost 250 foster dogs so far, and I remember every one of them.

"Eventually, all the active work with large dogs caused a back injury, and my subsequent harboring of Beagles caused a tremendous asthma problem. So I got the message that it might be time to just coddle Jack (the Akita mix) and Gotti (a pit-pointer "foster failure"), and find a way to help others continue the good work.

"Keep fighting the good fight, and we'll support you as best we can!"
