His name is Boggle, or Boggie for short. We named him after the breed nickname – he’s a half Boston terrier, half beagle. His head and personality are all beagle, but he’s got a lovely tall, slender build and is a dark seal-brown with the traditional Boston terrier white feet and stripe on his nose. He was born in 2005 so is in the prime of his life, and he’s never been sick. He’s up to date on all his shots including bordatella. He’s very good with other dogs, interested and wanting to play, not particularly dominant. He’s very food-focused, which makes him easy to teach for treats, but we’ve never had trouble with him trying to get into our garbage (unlike our other dog), and I’ve taught him to sit politely for treats. He can even sit with his eyes fixed very intently on a delicious-looking treat while I say “wait,” until I say “free” and let him take it. He’s completely housetrained – again, unlike one of our others – though because of the other dog’s casual attitude toward housetraining, we keep them all in crates at night. He hasn’t ever met a cat, but my son is almost 4, and Boggie was great with him from birth on. Now that my son is pretty rambunctious, Boggie discreetly stays out of his way unless my son is scratching his back, which he loves from anyone. He is very affectionate and, though playful, he is well able to settle down and lean on my feet quietly. His only real problem is entirely our fault – we have a big yard so never walk him, so he doesn’t walk well on leash, he tends to pull. He is easy to teach, though, so should be pretty easy to train out of that bad habit.
I forgot one other thing - one way he is NOT beagle-like is that he doesn't wander off too badly! Seems like there are a zillion beagle strays because they like to explore but can't find their way home. Not this one. Our Tibbie loves to explore - that's why we have an Invisible Fence in addition to the wooden one he can always find a hole to squeeze through. Boggie followed him out once or twice, but always made it home, and as we upped the efforts to keep the Tibbie contained, Boggie lost interest. Yay!
